How Instana detects Frequent TCP retransmissions

Problem:

How Instana detects this type of error: Frequent TCP retransmissions?

Solution:

We capture TCP retransmissions metric. This is basically surfacing netstat statistics. When TCP fails it generates the TCP errors. We alert on them when they are above 10%. In the sensor side, TCP retransmissions are collected by the Host sensor. TCP retransmissions metric represents the resending of packets (

) which have been either damaged or lost. As an APM tool, Instana doesn't provide visibility at the transport layer. Perhaps using wire shark we would get some information about what packet route is causing retransmission.
